Sauna and cold plunge in Jeddah: when the cold surface sweats

On the Red Sea coast the air carries water and salt. A 4 °C plunge and a heated cabin both have to be drawn for what that does to stone, glass, pipework and a chiller coil.

The searches are ‘sauna jeddah’ and ساونا جدة; the buildings behind them split in two. A corniche apartment is a lift, a balcony and a building manager; a villa on the north corniche is a garden, a wall and the sea. Both share the coast's air, which decides what the surfaces do.

Where the water on a cold surface comes from

In Jeddah the mean daily maximum is 39.4 °C in July and 38.7 °C in August, and January averages 28.9 °C by day and 18.2 °C by night (National Center for Meteorology normals for 1982-2011, via the WMO World Weather Information Service). The thermometer is half of the coast's climate; the other half is water in the air. Humid air gives up its water on any surface colder than its dew point, and a plunge at 3–5 °C sits far below it on a humid day, so everything the cold water touches or cools becomes a condenser. The condensate hands its latent heat to the surface, so the sweat loads the chiller as well as the floor.

A lid does double duty: it keeps humid air off the cold water and takes condensation out of the chiller's load, one of the gains counted in sizing a plunge chiller in 45 °C air.

Salt on the coil: coatings, stainless and a rinse

Heat sets how much cooling a chiller delivers; salt and damp decide how long its coil lasts. A coil is thin metal with a large surface, which a salt film attacks first, so the equipment list carries four lines:

  • A coated condenser coil. Ask every supplier, us included, for the coating data for coastal duty.
  • 316 stainless where metal meets water: fixings, handrails, fittings, the display post.
  • A plant niche out of the spray. Which way does the wind blow off the sea at your site, and does the niche face it?
  • A fresh-water rinse of the coil, the post and the glass, written into the care sheet.

Corniche apartments: the lift decides the order

On a high floor the first drawing is the route, not the balcony. A cabin arrives as numbered panels and glass, a compact tub as one piece, so the goods lift, the corridor turn and the balcony door set what can be ordered; measure the narrowest point on the route. The apartments and penthouses page lists eight questions for the building; Jeddah adds two. Wind: a high balcony takes more of it, so screens, pergola and cabin are fixed to the structure, and spray dries to a salt crust on the glass. Sight lines: a sea view is also a view into your balcony from the next tower.

Villas on the north corniche, and one question for the old town

A villa near the north corniche, in a district such as Obhur, has room for a corner cabin and a round plunge, and salt in the wind. The plant niche goes on the lee side of the house and the glass faces the garden rather than the shore.

In the historic old town the first question belongs to the municipality, not to us: which approvals apply before anything is fixed to, drilled into or loaded onto historic fabric, and who inspects the work? Until that answer is in writing we do not draw a suite into a house it treats as historic.

North along the same sea, resort-scale briefs have their own page, the Red Sea coast; for the inland contrast, where dust replaces damp, see Riyadh.

Two seats, a compact tub and one machine: a corniche balcony, priced

LineWhat it isIndicative range
Cabin2 seats, 1.5 × 1.3 × 2.2 m inside (4.3 m³), one glass wall, Harvia 4.5 kW$8.4–11.5k (SAR 32–43k)
Compact tub250 L with a lid, a quarter of a tonne of water$2.6–4k (SAR 9.8–15k)
Chiller1 HP, about 0.9 kW while the compressor runs$3.1–4.2k (SAR 12–16k)
Suiteillustrative, not a delivered project$14.1–19.7k (SAR 53–74k)

Taking 250 L from 30 °C to 4 °C removes about 7.6 kWh of heat (250 kg × 4.18 kJ per kg per K × 26 K ÷ 3,600; specific heat from NIST, 2025). The 1 HP machine is the nominal size for a shaded, lidded tub; if the survey puts the tub in afternoon sun or salt wind, the engineer steps up to 2 HP and the suite becomes $15.2–21.7k (SAR 57–81k). Deck, screens, the building's own requirements, duties and VAT are extra. Outdoor sauna and wooden tub at 45 °C covers shade and lids; the suite builder and price guide price other mixes.

What is the price of a sauna in Jeddah?

A 2-seat glass cabin starts around $8.4–11.5k (SAR 32–43k) and a 4-seat cabin around $11.5–16.5k (SAR 43–62k), before civil works, connections, permits and duties. The balcony suite above, with a tub and a chiller, is $14.1–19.7k (SAR 53–74k). Ranges stay indicative until the free layout replaces them with a quote.

Does a cold plunge in Jeddah work in the humid months?

It works if the layout plans for the damp: a lid, a drained deck, insulated pipework and a chiller with a margin over the nominal size. Humidity changes where the water goes, not the 3–5 °C set point (cold plunge pools).

Does an ice bath in Jeddah need ice?

No. On the coast bagged ice melts quickly into a wet floor and a temperature nobody chose. A chiller holds the set point, and the free-standing ice bath is the compact form for a balcony or a wet room.

Is an infrared sauna in Jeddah a better fit for a small apartment?

A heater-based cabin is our standard and works at 90–110 °C. Infrared panels can be added as an option and feel quite different; what a small apartment has to fit is the footprint, whichever heat it uses. Bespoke dry saunas explains the choice.
