System 01 · Cold

Built-in cold plunge pools, sized for Gulf summers

A small pool, not a tub: lined, stepped and set flush with the floor or raised to a seat edge, held at 3–5 °C by a plant we hide and size for the hottest afternoon of the year.

In 45 °C air, a portable tub gains heat from the sun, the paving and the air all at once, and a small compressor spends its life fighting all three. A built-in pool turns the problem round. It is insulated on every face, it sits in shade you plan for it, and the machine that cools it lives somewhere else.

What goes into the floor

  • A lined shell. A waterproofed recess in the slab or a composite shell set into it, drawn together with your structural engineer.
  • A finish you choose. Glass or porcelain mosaic, tile, or natural stone; travertine coping for a seat edge.
  • Steps and a seat. Underwater steps with a stainless handrail, so entering water at 4 °C is a slow decision rather than a jump.
  • Circulation and filtration. Water is filtered and sanitised continuously; commercial pools add UV or ozone as a second line (see water treatment for commercial cold plunges).
  • One small display. A plain rectangular unit at the rim shows the temperature as a single large digit. The machine is never in view.

If you plan a row of pools for a club or a hotel, choose the square: it lines up, it shares one plant and the seat edge doubles as the place where the next guest waits.

Why we shade it before we cool it

Water is heavy and stubborn. Taking 1 °C out of 1,100 L means moving about 1.3 kWh of heat (4.18 kJ per kg per K × 1,100 kg). Bringing a 30 °C fill down to 4 °C is roughly 33 kWh of heat to remove before the pool even starts to hold its temperature.

After that comes the load nobody prints on a datasheet: sunshine. Midday sun can deliver close to 1 kW to every square metre it reaches, and a plunge surface of 1.5 m² absorbs a large part of it. Shade or an insulated lid takes out the single biggest item, which is why our layouts arrive with a pergola, a louvred screen or a cover already drawn in. The chiller is then sized for what is left, with a margin over the nominal table (see chillers built for heat).

Weight, drains and the slab

  • Weight. 1,100 L is 1.1 tonnes of water over about 1.5 m²: roughly 700 kg on every square metre before the shell, the finish and the bathers. Harmless on a ground slab; on a roof or a podium it is a number for your structural engineer before the layout is signed.
  • Drain. The pool must be emptied for service and its filter backwashed. Ask the building's engineer where the permitted discharge point is.
  • Plant niche. A ventilated space in the shade, as close to the pool as the plan allows: every metre of pipe is a metre of heat gain, so all runs are insulated.
  • Access. A service hatch or door wide enough for the plant to be replaced without lifting the paving.

Price and what it covers

Indicative ranges: round $16.7–28k (SAR 63–105k), square $17.7–30k (SAR 66–113k). They cover the lining and finish, steps and handrail, circulation, filtration, a chiller sized for Gulf heat, the display and commissioning with a signed temperature test. They leave out the structural recess and waterproofing by the main contractor, connections to the building's power and drains, permits, shade structures, duties and VAT, and hoisting. The firm quote follows the layout; the full table sits in the price guide.

Can a cold plunge pool really hold 4 °C through a Gulf summer?

That is the set point we design for, 3–5 °C within ±0.3 °C, with the plant sized for the site's hottest afternoon and shade or a lid assumed. The pool is tested at handover and the last instalment falls due only after a signed temperature test. A pool in direct sun with no cover needs a much bigger machine, and we say so in the layout instead of promising the same figure.

Do you build a cold pool without a sauna?

Yes. A pool alone is a sensible first stage for a club, a gym or a villa; a glass sauna can follow, and the plant niche is drawn with that in mind.

Who can use it?

Healthy adults, seated, for short stays. It is a plunge pool, not a swimming pool, and a person with a heart or blood-pressure condition should ask a doctor first. Commercial pools need posted rules and staff who know them.

Can I get one in SAR or another currency?

Ranges are shown in US dollars with the riyal beside them because the riyal is pegged. Quotes in Qatari riyal, Kuwaiti dinar, Bahraini dinar or Omani rial are issued on request.
