Saudi Arabia's public supply runs at 60 Hz, joined to the 50 Hz GCC interconnected grid through a back-to-back converter station (GCCIA, 2026); Qatar, Bahrain and Oman specify 50 Hz in their building and network standards, and Kuwait's grid is 50 Hz.
Which loads care, and which do not
| Load | Cares about 60 versus 50 Hz? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sauna heater (resistive elements) | No | heat output depends on voltage and resistance, not on frequency |
| Heater controller and contactors | Check the rating | components are labelled for a frequency range; most are rated for both |
| Circulation pump (induction motor) | Yes | motor speed is set by the supply frequency |
| Chiller compressor | Yes | same reason, plus the refrigerant circuit is matched to the speed |
| Condenser fan | Yes | airflow and noise change with speed |
| LED lighting drivers | Rarely | most accept 50 to 60 Hz; the label says |
The arithmetic of a motor
An induction motor with two poles has a synchronous speed of 120 × frequency ÷ poles: 3,600 rpm at 60 Hz and 3,000 rpm at 50 Hz, a difference of twenty per cent. A pump obeys the affinity laws: flow rises with speed, pressure with its square and power with its cube. A pump designed for 50 Hz and run at 60 Hz would, in theory, move 20% more water at 44% more pressure while drawing about 73% more power, which is more than its motor and its seals were chosen for. Equipment must be built, or approved by the manufacturer, for the supply it will see.
Voltage and phases
On voltage, the older 127/220 V system is still in use in many parts of Saudi Arabia while the move to 230/400 V continues under Council of Ministers Resolution No. 425, and new residential areas are already on single-phase 220/230 V (Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization, SASO); Qatar and Oman specify 415/240 V and Bahrain 400/230 V.
For scale: a 15 kW sauna heater on a 400 V three-phase supply draws about 22 A per phase, and a 24 kW heater about 35 A. A 4 HP chiller adds about 3.6 kW while its compressor runs. These are the figures your electrical engineer needs for cable and breaker sizes, and they are on the layout.
A worked example: a 15 kW cabin and a 4 HP chiller on one supply
| Load | Rating | Current at 400 V three-phase | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sauna heater, 8 seats | 15 kW | 21.7 A per phase | resistive, power factor 1 |
| Chiller, 4 HP | 3.6 kW electrical | 6.1 A per phase | assumes a power factor of 0.85 |
| Circulation and filtration pumps | about 0.5 kW | 0.8 A per phase | assumes the same power factor |
| Total connected | about 19 kW | about 29 A per phase | the breaker is sized by the electrical engineer |
A motor also draws several times its running current for a moment when it starts, which is why chiller compressors are fitted with a starting method that suits the supply and why a generator or a weak supply needs the manufacturer's advice. Not one of these figures is a design, only the starting point for the conversation with your electrical engineer.
Cable length and voltage drop
Long runs cost voltage. For a 15 kW heater at about 22 A per phase, 50 m of 6 mm² copper (about 2.9 Ω per kilometre per conductor) drops roughly 1.732 × 21.7 A × 0.146 Ω, about 5.5 V or 1.4% of 400 V. That is acceptable. The same heater at the end of 150 m of the same cable drops about 4% and would want a thicker cable. Tell us the distance from the board to the plant room and the cabin, and the layout lists the cable size we expect.
What we specify for Saudi Arabia
- Chillers built as 60 Hz units, with the compressor, fan and pump motors rated for 60 Hz and the data plate saying so.
- Circulation pumps and filtration pumps rated for 60 Hz and matched to the pool's flow.
- Heaters with resistive elements, chosen for kilowatts and voltage; frequency is not a selection criterion.
- Controllers and contactors with a rated frequency range that includes 60 Hz and the local voltage.
- A supply check at survey: a photograph of the distribution board, the main breaker rating and whether the supply is single- or three-phase.
The machines are described under chillers for heat, and the country-level terms for supply, currency and tax are on the Saudi Arabia page.
The other four countries
| Country | Frequency | Nominal voltage |
|---|---|---|
| Saudi Arabia | 60 Hz | older 127/220 V still in use; moving to 230/400 V (SASO, Resolution No. 425) |
| Qatar | 50 Hz | 240/415 V ±6%, three-phase four-wire (Kahramaa wiring code, 2016) |
| Kuwait | 50 Hz | 240 V household standard (US ITA, 2026); three-phase confirmed at survey |
| Bahrain | 50 Hz | 400/230 V low-voltage network (EWA) |
| Oman | 50 Hz | 415/240 V ±6%, three-phase four-wire (OES-4, 2019) |
A project that crosses a border, or equipment bought elsewhere in the region and shipped to Riyadh, is one way a 50 Hz machine finds itself on a 60 Hz supply. The data plate is the test: it states the frequency, and if it says 50 Hz only, it does not go on a Saudi plant room wall.
A short list for the consultant
- State 60 Hz in the Saudi specification for every motor-driven item of plant.
- Ask the supplier for the data plate of each pump, fan and compressor, not the catalogue.
- Confirm voltage and phases against the building's distribution board, not against a drawing.
- Keep spare filters, seals and contactors sourced for the same supply.
- Record the frequency on the commissioning sheet so that a future service visit does not guess.
The loads for each system are tabulated for consultants on the architects and MEP page.
Can a 50 Hz chiller run in Riyadh?
Not without the manufacturer's approval and a matching supply. Ours are built as 60 Hz units for Saudi projects. If a machine bought elsewhere is on the site already, send the data plate and we will say what can be done.
Does my sauna heater need a special model for 60 Hz?
No. The elements are resistive. We select the heater by kilowatts and voltage; see panoramic glass saunas.
What if my villa has the older low-voltage supply?
That is why the supply is confirmed at survey. A cabin can be heated on a lower voltage with a different heater selection, but the currents change and the cables must be sized to match.
