Saunas and cold plunges in Saudi Arabia: four climates, one supply standard

The Riyadh plateau, the humid shore at Jeddah, the Gulf coast at Khobar and the Red Sea destinations ask different things of a plunge pool and the same thing of its motors.

Saudi Arabia is the one market of the five where a survey and a delivery can be a flight apart. A Riyadh villa, a Red Sea hotel terrace and a Khobar compound share a supply standard and the rules on money and tax, and little else. We keep the product and move the design.

One supply standard, ordered once for the whole kingdom

Every pump, fan and compressor we send to a Saudi site is ordered for the national supply, and its data plate says so. Saudi Arabia's public supply runs at 60 Hz, joined to the 50 Hz GCC interconnected grid through a back-to-back converter station (GCCIA, 2026), and the older 127/220 V system is still in use in many parts of the country while the move to 230/400 V continues under Council of Ministers Resolution No. 425, with new residential areas already on single-phase 220/230 V (Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization, SASO). A sauna heater is a resistor and ignores frequency, so it follows the building's voltage, confirmed at survey; motors do not (which loads care about frequency, chillers built for heat).

Riyals, VAT, duty and SABER: the lines outside our ranges

Ranges on this site are in US dollars with riyals beside them. The Saudi riyal is held at 3.75 to the US dollar, a rate the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) has reaffirmed (SAMA statement, 2020).

Saudi Arabia levies VAT at 15%, in force since July 2020 (PwC Tax Summaries, 2026), and imports are subject to the GCC common external customs tariff, generally 5% of the CIF value for most goods (US International Trade Administration, 2026). On our quotes freight, duty and VAT are separate lines, never folded into these ranges. Qatar and Bahrain change the same lines at their own borders.

Saudi Arabia runs import conformity through the SABER platform of SASO, which registers products, issues product conformity certificates and issues the shipment certificates needed before goods reach the Saudi market (SASO SABER, 2026); whether a given heater or chiller is regulated depends on its customs tariff code, which the importer and the broker check item by item.

Two Saudi briefs priced: a compound villa and a club room

Brief (illustrative)What is in itIndicative range
Compound villa, Riyadh4-seat corner-glass cabin $11.5–16.5k; square plunge $17.7–30k; shade pergola $2.6–5.5k; warm LED lighting $0.5–0.8k$32.3–52.8k (SAR 121–198k)
Padel club, two courts finishing together6-seat glass cabin $16.5–23.5k; one hot and cold pair $27.7–48k$44.2–71.5k (SAR 166–268k)

Both are composites, not delivered projects. The villa's corner cabin has two glass walls, so its heater steps up to about 12 kW (three-phase); the club cabin, with one glass wall, is heated by a Harvia 12 kW (3-phase) unit, and the pair adds a pool heater and a chiller to one plant room. Civil works, connections, permits, duties, tax and hoisting are left out. See panoramic glass saunas, villas and compounds, the Riyadh padel club profile, the price guide and the suite builder.

Saudi Arabia bans work under direct sunlight from 12:00 to 15:00 between 15 June and 15 September for private-sector establishments (Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, 2026 season). We place outdoor days around it; planning around Ramadan and the season works the calendar backwards from an opening.

Public figures behind the briefs, and what each one measures

  • Saudi Vision 2030: a goal of 40% of the population exercising at least once a week by 2030, up from 13% in the baseline year (Saudi Vision 2030 document, 2016).
  • GASTAT, a different measure, quoted separately: 48.2% active for at least 30 minutes a week in 2021, up from 45% in 2019 (Household Sports Practice Survey 2021, published 2022).
  • A target of 150 million tourism visits a year by 2030, domestic and international (Saudi Press Agency, Minister of Tourism, 2024).
  • A wellness economy of $41.56 billion in 2024, growing 12.2% a year from 2019 (Global Wellness Institute, Country Rankings 2019–2024, January 2026).
  • More than 1,000 padel courts (Playtomic and Strategy&, Global Padel Report 2026).

They describe the market, not what a cabin earns.

Which offices should I ask before ordering in Saudi Arabia?

Four, in writing. The municipality: does a pool recess or a free-standing cabin need a permit? Civil defence: what does it require for a heater, ventilation and detectors? The electricity utility: does the extra load need an application or a new breaker? The compound or building management: what are its rules on roofs, deliveries and noise? Sauna installation in Riyadh gives the order.

Does a Red Sea site need different equipment from a Riyadh villa?

The suite is the same and the specification is not. Inland the plant fights dust and sun; on the coast, salt and wet air: coated coils, marine-grade stainless near water, vapour-tight insulation on cold pipework.

Do you survey by video or on site?

We start with a video walk-through; a roof, a podium or a remote resort can also have a survey on site.

How much electrical load does a villa suite add?

The corner cabin of the villa suite above needs a heater of about 12 kW for its two glass walls, and a 4 HP chiller draws about 3.6 kW while its compressor runs: about 15.6 kW if both run at once. The building's voltage and phases decide the cable and breaker sizes; we confirm them at survey.
